Java - Sun's Portable Programming Language


Java programs are designed to run on all major systems on the Net.  A Java applet can be automatically installed on your system 
to enhance your Web browser on the fly.
This allows your Web visitors to automatically interact with customized presentations and data, 
without having to first locate and install specialized software.


For programmers, Java is an ideal Web language, in that programs written in Java will work on virtually all major 
computer systems.


While Java applets tend to be somewhat slower than platform-specific plugins, 
work is underway to provide native compilers and 
Java chips to significantly improve the performance of Java applets.
