Active X - Microsoft's Plugin Standard


Active X provides a standard mechanism for extending and adding new features into existing Windows programs.


Windows users can add support for new browser applets by clicking on ActiveX links
or dragging ActiveX OLE/COM plugins onto their ActiveX-enabled web browsers.


Web administrators can extend the capabilites of their web servers by adding ActiveX ISAPI plugins to their servers.


While ActiveX plugins are highly optimized for use on Windows, they are not yet well suited for cross-platform (unix, MacOS) environments -- 
and as such, their use on the Web has been somewhat limited.
